My name is Haider Ali, and I’m an international student from Pakistan currently studying Electronics Engineering in Kaunas, Lietuvos inžinerijos kolegija HEI. I’m a curious person who enjoys exploring new cultures and technologies. I’m always eager to step out of my comfort zone, whether it's navigating a new city or learning a new skill.
I chose Lietuvos inžinerijos kolegija HEI because of its strong engineering program and Kaunas’s vibrant student life. This city offers a unique blend of history and modernity, making it an exciting place to study.
The biggest challenge has been adjusting to the cultural and social differences: the hardest part was adapting to the colder weather and getting by without knowing much Lithuanian. My advice? Embrace every new experience, be open to learning the local language, and don’t be afraid to connect with others—it makes adjusting so much easier.
Kaunas has this unique charm—there’s always something happening, from art festivals to community events. I love exploring the old town’s cobblestone streets, discovering hidden cafes, and appreciating the city’s impressive street art. In my free time, I enjoy music, reading, and meeting up with friends to soak in the city’s lively atmosphere.
Studying abroad has been a long-time goal and even though I expected everything here to feel completely different, surprisingly, I found many similarities in values and lifestyle. People here are as welcoming and curious as those back home. I’m still learning, but I enjoy saying “Labas” (Hello). It’s a small word, but it always brings a smile and instantly bridges the language barrier.
People are curious about Pakistani culture, especially our food and traditional clothing. They often ask about the differences in weather and lifestyle, and I love sharing stories about our colorful festivals and spicy dishes. I wish I could have brought more traditional spices from home. The flavors remind me of my family’s cooking, and it’s a great way to introduce my friends here to Pakistani cuisine.
Initially I had sort of a culture shock! The lifestyle, social norms, and even the climate are all quite different, however, by observing and participating, I started appreciating the local way of life, and now I feel a special connection to Kaunas. I’d love more opportunities for local and international students to interact, though, I think it would create a richer cultural exchange and make it easier for us to build lasting friendships.
I have only been here for a little over a month, but I have already tried some traditional dishes: I tried Šaltibarščiai (cold beet soup) with kefir, which is very traditional in Lithuania” it was unique and definitely something different, however, I ended up liking its refreshing taste.
Studying in Kaunas, Lietuvos inzinerijos kolegija HEI has been an incredible journey so far: the city’s warmth and the opportunities for growth make it unforgettable. I would encourage anyone considering it to go for it—you won’t regret it.
